Take a Hike | Roman Nose Lakes

If you’re looking to spend a day among some of the most beautiful mountains and mountain lakes in northern Idaho, look no further than Roman Nose. This popular trail system showcases some of the most beautiful scenery in the Selkirk Mountains, about an hour-and-a-half drive north of Sandpoint.

Roman Nose Lakes, Selkirk Mountains Idaho

Nestled beneath the towering 7,260-foot Roman Nose Peak, the trailhead is a gateway to three crystal-clear alpine lakes. Adventurous hikers can tackle a rewarding off-trail scramble to the summit, where panoramic views of the rugged Selkirk Crest await.

The trail begins with a beautiful and well-maintained boardwalk, with the first lake just steps away from the parking area. The trail meanders gently through a fragrant forest of towering firs, before opening up to a grove of larches that burst into a brilliant yellow hue during fall. The road and trail are lined with huckleberry bushes and the upper lakes are popular for fishing.

A four-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended for reaching the trailhead. Of the two routes available, the one turning off in Naples onto Deep Creek Loop is your best bet. Alternatively, the route via McArthur Lake Road becomes impassable for most vehicles about three miles from the trailhead, though rugged off-road vehicles like Jeeps or ATVs should manage it fine.

If you’re looking to get a particularly early start, or if you’re coming from out of town, there’s a campground just before the trailhead (for tent camping only).

Whether you're a family seeking an easy nature escape or someone new to exploring Idaho's wild beauty, Roman Nose Lakes offers a perfect balance of accessibility and scenic reward. It’s a hike that fills you with a sense of peace and accomplishment—definitely one I’d feel comfortable enjoying solo.
