Take a Hike | Evan's Landing
Evan’s Landing is one of many trails located around Farragut State Park. At 3.5 miles (round-trip) it’s a great option for a day hike or an overnighter.
After camping at Round Lake, way back over Memorial Day weekend, we decided to make the most of our time up north by making the quick jaunt over to Careywood and try a trail I’d had my eye on for a while. Together our group of six adults, three dogs and one infant found our way along the dirt roads, weaving toward the trailhead.
A note to those visiting for the first time, at the final fork before getting to the trailhead, there’s a sign saying it’s a private road - don’t let that deter you. The trailhead is in a little cul de sac area not too far after that sign, it’s marked as trail 64.
The trail is all downhill initially, mostly shaded but with pretty views of Pend Oreille and the Cabinet Mountains. While it’s all downhill, it didn’t feel particularly steep, thanks in part to the many switchbacks winding through the trees.
At the bottom of the trail, you can typically enjoy a nice gravel beach and have access to a few camp spots. However, we happened to time our hike at the peak runoff season, so the beach was covered and the trail abruptly ended. We let the dogs go down to the water while we found some rocks or tree stumps to sit on for a quick snack and rest before turning back for the climb.
Getting There
As I mentioned, the back roads were a little confusing in parts, but just stick to the map and directions, and don’t turn around because of the private property sign.
As always, be good trail stewards and pack out all your trash or other waste.
Happy hiking!
